Lake Natron is one of Tanzania’s most otherworldly destinations — a remote, alkaline lake located in the Great Rift Valley, near the Kenyan border. Its vivid red and pink hues, caused by salt-loving microorganisms, create a surreal setting that looks almost Martian. Despite the harsh conditions, Lake Natron is the breeding ground for over 75% of East Africa’s lesser flamingos, making it a critical ecological site. The area is dominated by Ol Doinyo Lengai, an active volcano sacred to the Maasai. Visitors to Lake Natron come for its raw beauty, cultural encounters, birdwatching, hikes to waterfalls, and the chance to explore one of Africa’s most unique and unspoiled regions.
