» Itineraries » Lemosho Route – Scenic, Challenging Kilimanjaro Climb for Experienced Trekkers
The Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Trek is one of the mountain’s most scenic and remote trails, offering panoramic vistas, rich wildlife, and a quieter, less crowded trekking experience. Starting from the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro, trekkers ascend through dense, lush rainforests before reaching the dramatic Shira Plateau.
On the first day, climbers are often accompanied by an armed ranger to ensure safety, as forested sections occasionally host elephants and buffalo. The route is famous for its diverse landscapes, including montane forests, high-altitude moorlands, and expansive alpine zones. This variety allows trekkers to experience the full ecological range of Kilimanjaro in a single journey.
Begin your journey with a scenic drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate (3 hours), followed by a short 4WD ride to Lemosho Glades. From here, start your trek through lush montane forest trails leading to Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree Camp), at 2,650m.
Trek into the heather moorland zone, passing streams and traversing the Shira Ridge. You’ll bypass Shira 1 and continue across open moorland to reach Shira 2 Camp, located beside a mountain stream.
Ascend from Shira Plateau toward Lava Tower (4,650m), a key acclimatization point, then descend into the Barranco Valley to camp. Though you finish at a similar elevation, the high-altitude gain helps your body adjust.
Climb the steep Barranco Wall and cross the Karanga Valley before ascending to Barafu Camp. You’ll complete the South Circuit here, with stunning summit views from multiple angles.
Start your summit push between midnight and 2 AM, ascending through scree and ice to reach Stella Point, then the roof of Africa—Uhuru Peak at 5,895m. After photos and celebration, descend via Barafu to Mweka Camp.
