» Itineraries » Lemosho Route – Scenic, Challenging Kilimanjaro Climb for Experienced Trekkers
The Lemosho Route is one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and remote trails, offering panoramic views, rich wildlife, and a quieter trekking experience. Beginning from the western side of the mountain, the route ascends through lush rainforests and across the dramatic Shira Plateau. On the first day, trekkers are often accompanied by an armed ranger due to the presence of wildlife such as elephants and buffalo in the forested area.
Though beautiful, the 6-day Lemosho climb is considered challenging and is best suited for adventurous climbers with prior hiking or backpacking experience. The trail demands good physical fitness, especially with limited acclimatization time. Its varied landscapes and gradual ascent profile make it a rewarding journey for those prepared to take on the challenge.
Begin your journey with a scenic drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate (3 hours), followed by a short 4WD ride to Lemosho Glades. From here, start your trek through lush montane forest trails leading to Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree Camp), at 2,650m.
Trek into the heather moorland zone, passing streams and traversing the Shira Ridge. You’ll bypass Shira 1 and continue across open moorland to reach Shira 2 Camp, located beside a mountain stream.
Ascend from Shira Plateau toward Lava Tower (4,650m), a key acclimatization point, then descend into the Barranco Valley to camp. Though you finish at a similar elevation, the high-altitude gain helps your body adjust.
Climb the steep Barranco Wall and cross the Karanga Valley before ascending to Barafu Camp. You’ll complete the South Circuit here, with stunning summit views from multiple angles.
Start your summit push between midnight and 2 AM, ascending through scree and ice to reach Stella Point, then the roof of Africa—Uhuru Peak at 5,895m. After photos and celebration, descend via Barafu to Mweka Camp.
