Tanzania is a dream destination for many travelers—offering world-class wildlife safaris, cultural encounters, idyllic beach getaways, and epic mountain climbs. But one factor can make or break your experience: the weather.
From the sun-drenched plains of the Serengeti to the misty slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro and the palm-fringed beaches of Zanzibar, Tanzania’s climate varies significantly across regions and seasons. Knowing what to expect can help you choose the best time to visit, pack appropriately, and plan your itinerary smartly.
In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know about Tanzania’s weather, including seasonal patterns, regional differences, travel tips, and best months for specific activities.
Tanzania sits just below the equator, giving it a tropical climate that differs by altitude and proximity to the coast.
There are three major climate zones:
Coastal and Islands (Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam, Pemba)
Hot, humid, and tropical all year round.
Inland Plateaus and Savannah (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara)
Moderate temperatures, cooler at night, especially during dry season.
Highland and Mountain Regions (Kilimanjaro, Meru, Arusha Highlands)
Cooler with cold nights and alpine weather at high elevations.
The dry season is Tanzania’s most popular period for travel. It’s when the weather is most predictable—offering clear skies, pleasant temperatures, and prime wildlife viewing opportunities.
Ideal for safaris – animals gather around remaining water sources, making them easier to spot.
Minimal rain means excellent road conditions, especially important for remote parks.
Low humidity in most areas makes travel more comfortable.
Fewer insects, especially mosquitoes, reducing malaria risk.
Serengeti/Ngorongoro: 20–27°C (68–81°F) during the day; nights can drop below 10°C (50°F)
Zanzibar & Coast: 25–30°C (77–86°F)
Mount Kilimanjaro foothills: 15–25°C (59–77°F), freezing at summit
This is the best time for the Great Wildebeest Migration—especially July to September, when herds cross the Mara River in a dramatic survival spectacle.
Tanzania’s wet season transforms the landscape into a lush, green paradise. It’s divided into:
Short rains (November to mid-December): Light, scattered showers, often in the afternoon.
Long rains (March to May): Heavier, more sustained rainfall, especially in April.
Stunning green scenery perfect for photography.
Fewer tourists, meaning lower rates for lodges and tours.
Excellent for bird watchers—migratory birds arrive from Europe and Asia.
Calving season (Jan–Feb) in the Serengeti brings thousands of wildebeest births—and predator action.
Road conditions can deteriorate, especially in remote safari parks.
Some camps and lodges close during April–May.
Afternoon showers can interrupt activities—but mornings are often clear.
Daytime: 25–32°C (77–90°F)
Nights: Cooler in highlands, warmer on the coast
If you’re heading to Zanzibar, Mafia Island, or Dar es Salaam, expect warm temperatures and high humidity year-round. The best beach weather coincides with the dry seasons:
June to October: Cool breeze, clear skies—ideal beach conditions.
December to February: Hot and sunny, but more humid.
The rainy season (March–May) brings heavy downpours and choppy seas, making beach travel less ideal.
Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro or Mount Meru offers a unique weather challenge. As you ascend, you pass through five ecological zones, each with its own climate. The summit is an arctic environment—expect freezing temperatures even when it’s sunny at the base.
January to March: Clear mornings, fewer climbers
June to October: Dry, popular, and stable weather
Avoid April–May (heavy rain) and November (short rains)
🧗 Pro Tip: Always prepare for all conditions when climbing—sun, wind, rain, and sub-zero temperatures at night.
Month | Weather Highlights | Best For |
---|---|---|
January – February | Warm, some short rains | Calving season, beach holidays |
March – May | Long rains, wet conditions | Lush landscapes, birding, off-season rates |
June – October | Dry, cool, sunny | Safaris, climbing, Wildebeest Migration |
November – December | Short rains, warm | Fewer crowds, green scenery, Zanzibar |
Light cotton clothing (neutral colors for safari)
Warm jacket for evenings
Sun protection: hat, sunscreen, sunglasses
Binoculars & camera with zoom lens
Waterproof jacket or poncho
Waterproof bags for electronics
Quick-drying clothes & extra socks
Mosquito repellent and malaria prevention
Tanzania offers incredible experiences all year round, but your experience can vary dramatically based on the season. Whether you’re tracking lions in Serengeti, climbing Kilimanjaro, exploring the streets of Stone Town, or relaxing on a Zanzibar beach, understanding the weather ensures you’re ready for the adventure.
The best time to visit Tanzania depends on your travel goals. For safaris and hiking, go during the dry season. For lower prices, birding, or calving, consider the green season. Either way, Tanzania’s beauty shines no matter the forecast.

I had an amazing experience with Kennedy, my guide from Heart of Serengeti. He knows everything about nature and explained everything extremely well. He delivered an amazing service, taking me to the most beautiful and iconic parks in Tanzania, where I was amazed with the animals I had the opportunity to see. He is an excellent and safe driver, a charismatic person and made sure the experience was unforgettable. Definitely will come back for another safari. Kennedy is the best guide of Tanzania, patient and with a lot of knowledge of the fauna and vegetation of the country, he knows perfectly the parks and everyone, thanks to that the other guides call him when there are some interesting animals, lions eating, etc... in just 5 days we have seen a small hunt, two packs of lions eating, leopard, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes , rhinos and the rest of Tanzania animals!!! On this trip we were two families with children with two cars, in the other car the guide was called Said, charming and also with a lot of knowledge of wild animals. Unforgettable experience!!!! Recommended 100% Olaf Korpel2024-10-04Verified Very impressive safari! We can highly recommend this travel agency. This is the first time we did a safari and we were not sure what to expect. Therefore, this trip left a deep impression on us, it was great! We were very lucky to have Kennedy as Guide. He is very experienced, if there are animals to be seen somewhere he knows where to find them. Also because he has a huge network of friendly guides. Kennedy tries very hard to put his car in the best possible position to see the animals well. He has a great knowledge of the animals and their environment, he is very social and he really does his best for you. I had a stomach problem for a few days and wanted to cut the trip short. Kennedy suggested we see a local doctor first and await his verdict. The doctor examined me and prescribed me pills, after which I was able to finish the safari. I am very grateful to Kennedy for this! He is also a very reliable driver and able to remedy this in the event of a breakdown with the car (also with other guides).
