A Mount Meru Trek offers one of the most exciting short mountain adventures in northern Tanzania. Located inside Arusha National Park, Mount Meru provides spectacular views, diverse landscapes, and close wildlife encounters during the climb.
This 3-day trek follows the scenic Momella Route, which begins in open grasslands before entering dense forests and volcanic terrain. Along the way, hikers often see giraffes, buffalo, monkeys, and a wide variety of birds.
Unlike the busy trails of Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru remains quieter and less crowded. The trek is ideal for travelers who want a rewarding high-altitude adventure within a short timeframe.
Your adventure kicks off with a scenic drive to Momella Gate, where you’ll complete registration and receive a detailed trek briefing. From there, begin your ascent through the lush rainforest, escorted by an armed ranger for safety, as the area is home to diverse wildlife. The trail winds through open grasslands, offering the chance to spot giraffes, buffaloes, and various other wild animals in their natural habitat. By late afternoon, arrive at Miriakamba Hut (2,514 meters) for a hearty dinner and your first overnight stay on the mountain
After breakfast, the trek continues from the forest into the moorland zone, with the trail gradually becoming steeper as you ascend toward Saddle Hut at 3,570 meters. Upon arrival, take time to relax and recharge. For those feeling energetic, an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820 meters) is available, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. Later, return to Saddle Hut for a hearty dinner and an overnight stay.
Begin your summit attempt in the early hours before dawn, trekking under the stars from Saddle Hut. Ascend past Rhino Point (3,800m) and Cobra Point (4,350m), reaching Socialist Peak (4,566m) just in time to witness a breathtaking sunrise over Mount Kilimanjaro and the vast Tanzanian landscape.
After taking in the incredible panoramic views and celebrating your achievement, descend back to Saddle Hut for a short rest. From there, continue your trek down to Momella Gate, where your vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to Arusha for a well-earned rest and celebration of your successful climb.
